Why this shape
A check-woven cotton towel is flatter than a terry loop, and flat is what dries a wine glass clear — terry sheds fibre onto anything polished and you finish the job worse than you started. This is the cloth for the last step, after the plate is clean and before it goes out, which is a different job from the heavy absorbent cloth that mops the bench. Sold in twos so one is always dry, and reversible colourways so a stained side is not the end of it.
- Good for
- Drying glassware, polishing plate before service, and the final wipe that has to leave nothing behind.
- Not for
- Mopping a spill or gripping a hot handle — a flat check weave holds little water and less heat. Reach for a heavy side towel.
- Care
- Machine wash warm and tumble dry. Wash before first use so the weave softens and stops shedding; skip softener, which is what makes a flat towel push water around instead of taking it up.
