Why this shape

1000 is the grit that actually cuts metal — it is where a tired edge gets its apex back — and 6000 is fine enough to leave that apex polished rather than toothy. Putting both on one block is the honest starting point for someone sharpening their own knives for the first time: two faces cover the whole job, and there is nothing to buy again until the stone dishes. It arrives as a working set rather than a bare block, with the rubber and bamboo bases that stop a wet stone sliding and the angle guide that fixes the one variable beginners get wrong.

Good for
Bringing back a dull kitchen edge, refining it to a smooth finish, and learning to sharpen on a budget.
Not for
Chip repair — a broken edge wants a coarser stone below 1000 before this one is any use.
Care
This is a waterstone: soak it in water and never put oil on it, which ruins the stone. Keep it flat with the flattening stone included, and hold one angle — Seido publishes angle consistency as the thing that matters most.
